Seven Lauritzsen
Syver Lauritzsen (1990) is a Norwegian multidisciplinary artist and designer, educated from the Oslo School of Architecture and Design.
In his work, Syver uses everything from oil painting to coding artificial intelligence to create his artworks. Syver believes in honesty in the connection between material and motif: "An oil painting is best when it looks like an oil painting, AI-generated images are best when they look like AI images, complete with imperfections." He further describes working with oil paint like this: "I love the unpredictability and physicality of oil. There is a unique complexity and patina that builds up when working in layers over time with oil."
Syver's paintings have an autobiographical angle where he tries to convey something he feels but cannot describe in words. The paintings can thus be considered a process where he is honest with himself and ultimately creates self-portraits in various forms. He often depicts sorrow, uncertainty, and shame and describes it as: "I find that the vulnerable moments and moods are, in many ways, the most beautiful things, and this is reflected through the use of vibrant colors. Vague nostalgic memories that give a lump in the stomach are what make life worth living. And I want people to be able to recognize themselves in this. That's why I don't paint faces unless facial expressions are essential to communicate what I'm trying to convey. It makes it easier for the audience to put themselves into the motifs, instead of observing them from the outside."
Syver has also won national and international design awards and gained recognition when he fought his way to the semifinals of the Portrait Championship on NRK.
