Johanne Birkeland - Jossolini
Johanne Birkeland, also known as Jossolini, is a Norwegian ceramist and artist with workshops in Hvasser in Færder municipality and at Kroloftet in Oslo. She holds a journeyman's certificate in ceramics, has an academic background, and experience from private industry – a combination that characterizes her professional and exploratory approach to her craft.
All production takes place in her own workshops, where she is responsible for the design, shaping, and firing of each individual object. She uses traditional handicraft techniques such as throwing, pinching, and coiling, and works with both porcelain and stoneware.
Birkeland's fascination with clay as a material underpins her entire practice. She is inspired by the diverse qualities and characteristics of clay – from the fragile and transparent nature of porcelain to the coarse, tactile surface of stoneware. The result is works that balance between the delicate and the rustic, between tradition and innovation.
Through her artistic endeavors, Johanne Birkeland explores the relationship between craftsmanship, material, and form – continuing the Norwegian ceramic tradition with a personal and modern expression.
