Background:
I often get asked if I have photographs of specific motifs. Sometimes I can say yes, other times, as with this picture, I go on assignment for a client who today owns the first large-sized edition of this.

In this case, the client joined me on location; we sat on Romsdalseggen and looked towards Romsdalshorn on the left and Trollveggen on the right while waiting for the light to change. When the light was favorable, I clicked the camera, and when the light was flat, the conversation naturally turned to our shared interest in mountaineering, skiing, and base jumping.

It struck me that Norwegian climbing, in many ways (if one disregards Olav Trygvasson's daring ascent of Hornelen), originated precisely on Romsdalshorn when Christen Hoel and Hans Bjermeland pushed to the top with self-made pitons in 1828. Looking at this in contrast to international mountaineering during the same period, was it perhaps one of Norwegian mountaineering's finest moments?

To the right, Trollveggen dominates, which was not climbed for the first time until 1965. This is an incredible time span encompassing important moments, like clips fixed in time on a timeline. A timeline that extends into our own present, with new achievements such as the nascent beginning of base jumping in Europe in 1980, later wingsuit flying over the "flat" terrain below Romsdalshorn, and skiing in the right edge of Trollveggen, down Fivaruta.

The photograph got its name before we packed up the equipment up there on Romsdalseggen.

Tormod Granheim

Tormod's journey into art began with a childhood dream of photographing skis. The dream led him to Chamonix, where he first stood behind the camera, but soon found himself captivated by the mountain's steep lines. Through expeditions and lectures for businesses, the Norwegian Armed Forces, and NATO, he has lived in close proximity to the mountains for decades. After Everest, new projects followed – including becoming the first Nordic climber to ascend all 82 peaks over 4,000 meters in the Alps.
