Background:
I never enter the top lift on Aiguille du Midi without expectations, because up there you are met by a special world. Expectations are never higher than after heavy snowfalls, as when this photograph was captured. How much snow has fallen? How has the wind blown? What is the avalanche risk? Are the glacier's crevasses filled in by fresh snow bridges, making new ski terrain accessible?
When I travel to the mountains with this lift, my thoughts often turn to Joseph Campbell and his description of the Monomyth. Because going out onto this mountain, where there are no grooming machines or ski patrol, is clearly crossing a threshold. It is a step into the unknown, a special world, where you encounter challenges and often have good opportunities to gain new experiences. Experiences that form the basis for taking the lift to the mountains again, with new plans – perhaps ambitions to cross new thresholds. Some call it pushing boundaries, but I personally don't like that term much – because in extreme sports there will always be limits – for us, it's about precisely understanding where the limits are and what it takes to perhaps move them.
The limits I have moved myself have primarily been within me, and in that sense, a trip up into the mountains is perhaps first and foremost an inner journey.
