Background:
Mont Blanc is more than a mountain; it is the center of gravity in the Alps. An engine that drives mountaineering and tourism in an entire region.
First climbed by Jacques Balmat and Michel Paccard in 1786, an ascent that marked the beginning of modern mountaineering, hence the title of the photograph.
Many have asked me if I have a picture of this particular mountain, but it's not that easy... So many things have to align to create a good photograph. One cold autumn day I was lucky; a heavy autumn storm blew over the massif and covered the mountain in white snow. The snow that falls in spring and autumn has a unique quality that fascinates us skiers, because that snow adheres best to steep terrain.
The wind blew steadily and persistently and left its fingerprint in the fresh snow. Not a single trace was visible on the mountain when the clouds began to clear. But the wind was still clearly present; on location, I stood with a steady stream of ice needles on my neck, ice and snow crystals that are clearly visible in the right part of the picture – where they stream towards Mont Blanc's north face – backlit by the sun's sharp rays.
