Background:
Available / unavailable is a dynamic I try to describe with my photographs. This wall has a lot of it. Good skiers reach the bottom of the wall after an 8-10 minute slide from Aiguille du Midi. Average skiers don't reach it at all, unless they hire a guide to help them down the formidable Vallée Blanche glacier, which has its source among the ice at the bottom of the picture.

It's one thing to see it in the camera, but when I first saw the image on screen, I was overwhelmed by how crisp and rich in detail it was. This really needs to be seen physically.

I could have called the picture Devil's Ridge, after the series of needles to the left against the sky. I could have called it Couloir de Diable, after the 850-meter-high white stripe to the left, a line I skied with Tomas Olsson himself as training before our trip to Mount Everest.

I could have called it Gervasutti Pillar, or rotated the camera a few degrees to the right and included Couloir Gervasutti, which plunges down under the enormous cornice balancing against the sky on the right-hand side.

But I wanted to honor the multi-talented Jean Marc Boivin – a base jumper, climber, and skier who pushed boundaries perhaps more than anyone else in his time. Just reading ski and climbing guides and seeing the lines he first did has been an enormous inspiration. Therefore, this photograph must be named after the steep ice line Boivin established in the center of the picture, Supercouloir.

Tormod Granheim

Tormod's journey into art began with a childhood dream of photographing skiing. The dream led him to Chamonix, where he first stood behind the camera, but soon found himself captivated by the mountain's steep lines. Through expeditions and lectures for businesses, the Armed Forces, and NATO, he has lived in close proximity to the mountains for decades. After Everest, new projects followed – including becoming the first Nordic climber to ascend all 82 peaks above 4,000 meters in the Alps.
