Background:
Aiguille Noire is not just black by name. The mountain has a dark aura of mystery and trouble about it. The mountain is part of what is considered Western Europe's longest climbing route, Peuterey Integral, a ridge traverse that accumulates 4500 climbing meters and ends at the summit of Mont Blanc.
One of the challenges associated with Peuterey Integral is the many overhanging abseils down from Aiguille Noire and the very loose terrain further towards Bivouac des Dames Anglaises.
The photograph was captured as the sun's first rays hit the cloud cover over Val Veni. We are on the Brenva Ridge, where it steepens and becomes the climbing route Arête Kuffner.
Everything we see is Italian territory, but the furthest mountains border France; behind them lies the ski resort Val d'Isère. The glacier in the foreground, Glacier de la Brenva, stretches from the summit of Mont Blanc all the way down to the valley floor.
