Background:
“No matter how sophisticated you may be, a large granite mountain cannot be denied – it speaks in silence to the very core of your being.” - Ansel Adams
I could have chosen to title my motifs with what is seen in the picture. PETIT DRU would have been a good name for this motif - in fact, I just made that choice for another motif in the series, but that's another story, which I will come back to.
I wanted to find titles that tell their own little story. Like this one, because Petit Dru is more than just a name; it is a magnet for the eye and the imagination. This peak is so easily visible from the valley floor, and one of the main reasons for the construction of the railway line up to Montenvers, where tourists have flocked for 110 years. Petit Dru is in many ways the centerpiece among Chamonix's mountains, especially in the Aiguille Verte massif.
One is affected, as Ansel says, when one sees this kilometer-high granite pillar with its mighty steep walls, and the gigantic patch of snow called “La Niche”. For many, the strong sight is enough, but climbers delve deep within themselves and ask if they have what it takes to climb the mountain, via the classic north face, or the fresh west face.
We skiers like to claim that if it's white, you can ski it. “But there, you can't ski there?” say cross-country skiers and others who live a lowland life* and point to steep snow and ice, glued high on the mountainsides. Well, Bruno Gouvey emphasized how wrong one can be - do a Google search for the film Dru Express for five minutes of madness / passion in the middle of Petit Dru's north face.
*Thanks to Henrik Ibsen for this linguistic gem, from the poem “On the Plateaus”.
