Background:
I'm a bit of a "storm-chaser" when it comes to photography; I like the idea of clouds moving in the sky and mountains in their winter white attire. But it's a demanding challenge. Clouds tend to hide the subject. The white snow can burn out and thus conceal its beauty.
Chamonix had been under the storm for days, snow-heavy clouds had pressed in from the north and dumped their load over the massif. When we headed up the mountain, most of it was shrouded in fog. We got some wonderful turns in a white universe called Grands Montets – although I must admit I held back a bit on the skiing because my backpack was loaded with camera and optics.
Then the weather began to clear, and I pointed my camera towards the mountain in my heart, Aiguille du Midi – framed by the Aiguilles de Chamonix in the foreground and Mont Blanc – barely hidden in the clouds – in the background.
The cold was biting, the air still damp after the storm that was dying down. The wind had abated, but far from calm at this point. I looked for angles, climbed up above the top station of the ski lift and felt I had a unique opportunity. The snow was glued to granite in every direction I looked. Then I noticed the wall to the left of the subject and understood that it had to be part of the composition of the picture. The white-clad mountain wall would be able to show how the snow clung to the rock, and perhaps say something about the mountain's own quality. Chamonix's granite is so beautiful that for many it is a lifelong love. The challenge now was to place the camera and thus myself; I had to climb alone and unsecured out onto a small ledge hanging over an enormous mountainside often referred to as the Pas de Chevre sector. This is where my background in mountaineering came in handy; I still have the ability to move quite freely in steep terrain.
